SECTION V - THE FOUNDATIONS

Intent 348

الْقَصْدِ

Allah, the Almighty, said:

{…And whoever leaves his home as an emigrant to Allah and His Messenger and then death overtakes him—his reward has already become incumbent upon Allah…}349[an-Nisā’ 4:100]

قَالَ اللهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ "وَمَن يَخْرُجْ مِن بَيْتِهِ مُهَاجِرًا إِلَى اللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِ ثُمَّ يُدْرِكْهُ الْمَوْتُ فَقَدْ وَقَعَ أَجْرُهُ عَلَى اللَّهِ"

Qaṣd is about deciding to dedicate oneself to obedience. It is of three levels:

القَصْدُ الإزْمَاعُ عَلَى التَّجَرُّدُ للطَّاعَة.ِ وَهُوَ عَلَى ثَلاثِ دَرَجَاتٍ.

The first level is intent that:


  1. motivates spiritual training (disciplining)

  2. rids one from reluctance350

  3. invites one to shun the [lower] wants

الدَّرَجَةُ الْأُولَى:


  1. قَصْدٌ يَبْعَثُ عَلَى الِارْتِيَاضِ

  2. وَيُخَلِّصُ مِنَ التَّرَدُّدِ

  3. وَيَدْعُو إِلَى مُجَانَبَةِ الْأَغْرَاضِ

The second level is intent that:


  1. cuts all strings351

  2. disables all barriers352

  3. facilitates all challenges

الدَّرَجَةُ الثَّانِيَةُ:


  1. قَصْدٌ لَا يَلْقَى سَبَبًا إِلَّا قَطَعَهُ

  2. وَلَا حَائِلًا إِلَّا مَنَعَهُ

  3. وَلَا تَحَامُلًا إِلَّا سَهَّلَهُ

The third level is:


  1. intending surrender to the refinement of knowledge353

  2. responding to the intent of the law354

  3. daring the ocean of self-annihilation (fanâ’)

الدَّرَجَةُ الثَّالِثَةُ :


  1. قَصْدُ الِاسْتِسْلَامِ لِتَهْذِيبِ الْعِلْمِ

  2. وَقَصْدُ إِجَابَةِ دَاعِي الْحُكْمِ

  3. وَقَصْدُ اقْتِحَامِ بَحْرِ الْفَنَاءِ

348 This chapter is about making up our minds and determining our direction after awakening to the meaning of our existence.
349 The verse refers to one who chose their direction (qaṣd), decided that their destination is Allah and His Messenger ﷺ, and set out to reach it.
350 Since the direction has been finally decided, there will be no hesitation or walking off the straight path.
351 That will cause impediment or distraction for the seeker.
352 Between us and our ultimate pursuit.
353 To allow knowledge of the scriptures to reshape us and refine our characters without any reservations and with complete submissiveness.
354 By obedience and reflection on their wisdom, which will further enhance our enthusiastic acceptance of them and commitment to their fulfillment with iḥsân.
