SECTION IX - THE REALITIES

Sobriety

Allah, the Almighty, said:

{…until, when terror is removed from their hearts, they will say [to one another]: What has your Lord said? They will say: The truth…}754 [Sabâ’ 34:23]

Ṣaḥw is above sukr (intoxication) and it suits the station of basṭ (expansion). Ṣaḥw is a station that is clear of delay,755 suffices from any pursuit,756 and is purified from any culpability,757 for sukr is (being intoxicated) with the Real 758 and ṣaḥw is (being sober) by the Real, and that which is exposed to the (vision of the) Real is not free of bewilderment: 759 not the bewilderment of misgivings, however, but that of beholding the light of the might. As for that which is by the Real, it is rectified, free of deficiency, and is not subject to any flaws. 760

Ṣaḥw is of the stations of life,761 the valleys of union,762 and the displays of actuality. 763

754 They became sober after theywere shocked by the intensity of hearing God’s speech.
755 They arrived at their destination, so there is no more waiting.
756 It is a station of attachment to Allah and subsistence by Allah, so one who has already arrived need not find his or her destination. This never means that one should quit seeking more proximity to their Lord by seeking His pleasures, but it means that their pursuits become effortless.
757 Because one is in complete observance of the demands of Shari‘ah.
758 You become intoxicated from beholding the Lord with the eyes of your heart.
759 Beholding Him with the eyes of your heart through absorption into His attributes of majesty and beauty causes bewilderment.
760 Now they are watching Him by Him, so they are not overwhelmed.
761 See Station 84: Life.
762 The Sunni union is when one’s will is in complete unison with God’s will.
763 See Station 96: Actuality.
